FAQs

Why can’t I feed or give my dog water right before or after exercise?

Feeding a dog too close to exercise increases the risk of bloat, also known as Gastric Dilatation–Volvulus (GDV). Bloat is a life-threatening condition in which a dog’s stomach fills with gas and may twist, cutting off blood flow. It can develop very quickly and is often fatal without immediate emergency treatment.

Vigorous activity, heavy panting, excitement, and rapid water intake—especially when combined with a full or recently emptied stomach—significantly raise the risk of GDV.

Some dogs are at higher risk, particularly large or deep-chested breeds such as German Shepherds, Great Danes, Dobermans, Belgian Malinois, Standard Poodles, Boxers, and Setters. However, bloat can occur in any dog, regardless of breed, size, or age.

At Pace K9, we follow strict safety guidelines:

  • No feeding or large amounts of water at least 1 hour before exercise
(2 hours recommended for large or deep-chested breeds)

  • No feeding or large amounts of water at least 1 hour after exercise
(2 hours recommended for large or deep-chested breeds)

  • Water is offered in small, controlled amounts during rest periods

If a dog has been fed or had large amounts of water too close to a session, Pace K9 may refuse or cancel the session for the dog’s safety.

We are strict about these rules because bloat is largely preventable but often fatal once it occurs. Our priority is to provide structured, effective exercise while minimizing avoidable health risks. These guidelines reflect standard best practices in canine fitness and working-dog conditioning.

Does my dog need a harness?

Yes! We require all dogs to wear their own secure, well-fitting harness during slatmill sessions for both safety and sanitary reasons.

Every dog is built differently, which is why a properly fitted harness is essential for safe and effective slatmill sessions. A well-fitting harness allows full shoulder movement, distributes pressure comfortably across the body, and helps your dog stay balanced and confident while exercising. Poorly fitted or restrictive harnesses can limit motion or cause discomfort, which is why fit matters just as much as style.

We recommend a sport-style or working harness with a back D-ring designed for active movement—specifically non-restrictive harnesses that sit off the shoulders and chest and allow your dog to move naturally. These types of harnesses provide the best combination of safety, comfort, and control during dog-driven workouts.

Not sure if your harness is the right fit? No problem—we’re happy to help. During your Meet & Greet session, we can assess your dog’s harness, make fit adjustments, and offer guidance on finding a harness that works best for your dog’s body and movement style.

Who is this service best for?

This service is ideal for high-energy, athletic, and working breeds that need more than a walk or dog park to stay balanced. It’s also great for dogs who feel overwhelmed, reactive, anxious, or overstimulated in traditional group settings, as sessions take place in a calm, controlled environment.

Dogs needing safe conditioning, confidence-building, or structured exercise—including those recovering from limited activity—can benefit from closely supervised, adjustable workouts. Most of all, it’s for families looking for a healthy, purposeful outlet that supports better behavior, mental balance, and long-term wellbeing.

4

Is PACE K9 suitable for reactive or destructive dogs?

Yes. Our mobile, one-on-one approach is often well-suited for dogs who struggle in group environments or need structured outlets for their energy.

5

Will my dog be around other dogs?

No. Sessions are private and designed to minimize unnecessary triggers whenever possible.

6

Do you provide behavior training?

PACE K9 does not replace professional behavior training. Our services are intended to support overall well-being through structured exercise and enrichment.

7

Can exercise help with behavior issues?

Appropriate physical and mental activity can play an important role in a dog's routine. Results vary by dog, and services are designed to support - not guarantee - behavioral improvements.

8

What if my dog has specific triggers or concerns?

We encourage open communication before sessions so we can plan appropriately and create the safest, most supportive experience possible.

9

Do I need to be present for my dog’s session?

Yes and No — you don’t have to stay for every session. However, we recommend being present for your dog’s first session so your pup feels more comfortable, you can ask questions, and you can see firsthand how beneficial the experience is for your dog.
